Celebrities are hounded in almost every aspect of their lives. It has now become second nature to gawp at pictures of the latest pop stars in their bikinis on their summer holidays. But where do the stars retreat to when they hit the slopes and what does it say about them?
There are hundreds of luxury ski chalets in resorts spread across the globe, and the rich and famous fly down the black runs at the following destinations in Europe, America and Canada.
Getting Away from it all – Aspen, Colorado, USA
The Aspen ski resort is part of the Rocky Mountains region and this top end ski resort is home to a wide range of celebrities. Due to its quaint atmosphere, celebrities flock here to get away from the hectic routines of New York and LA.
So who wants to get away from it all and chill out. Those who regularly take skiing breaks here tend to be the older, most established stars: They include Michael Douglas, Kurt Russell, Kevin Costner, Goldie Hawn and Jack Nicholson
A break from filming – Sun Valley, Idaho, USA
This small town has around 1,400 residents and many celebrities flock to Sun Valley to break away from filming commitments. Sun Valley makes the most of Bald Mountain which has a 3400 feet vertical drop a 9150 feet incline making it the perfect landscape for skiing. Historical figure Ernest Hemingway is said to have stayed in the Lodge during the winter of 1939. Apparently Hemingway finished one of his most famous works, For Whom the Bell Tolls whilst staying in the resort.
The Sun Valley resort is popular amongst stars of the silver screen including the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, most of who are based in LA and for them it is a relatively easy hop.
.A touch of Royalty – Klosters, Switzerland
The Swiss ski resort of Klosters is particularly popular with royalty and Prince Charles has been frequenting Klosters for a long time now. So much so that the cable car station at the bottom of Klosters to the top of Gotschnagrat is now called “Prince of Wales.”
The Klosters resort is a short drive from Zurich so gives you easy access to other slopes in Switzerland.
Other celebrity and royals visitors have included Prince William, Kate Middleton and the creator of Sherlock Holmes series Arthur Conan Doyle.
Adrenalin Junkies - Whistler, Blackcomb Canada
The Whistler resort in Canada will be home to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Whistler is an extremely popular resort and has been growing in popularity for the last couple of years.
Whistler boasts a large range of heli-skiing facilities and boarding runs. Whistler also has over 200km mountain bike trails which get full use in the summer months. Celebrity Whistler resort fans include the likes of Justin Timberlake, Cameron Diaz, Katie Holmes, Seal, Heidi Klum, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins.
In amongst the crowds – Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France
Chamonix is one of the most famous ski resorts in the world with a wide range of world class luxury ski chalets. The Chamonix Mont-Blanc is home to the longest ski run in the world called the Vallée Blanche, which is 13.7 miles long.
Chamonix also features the highest peaks in the Alps range and also boasted the second highest peak in Europe!
The Mont Blanc resort gained notoriety when it played host to the 1924 Winter Olympics. Ever since then, the rich and famous have not been able to keep away and regulars include Saussure, Goethe and Bourrit.
Paparazzi Crowd – Meribel, France
Meribel is in the heart of the world’s largest and best linked ski resort called Trois Vallée. Skiiers have the choice of 150km slopes with nine black, 23 red, 34 blue and eight green runs on the edge of Meribel.
Lots of famous Brits love the resort and Victoria Beckham and other footballers wives often swoop in by for a session on the slopes and spending spree in the local shops.
Luxury chalets in Meribel are also popular with Russian billionaires and other wealthy star studded celebs.
So there you have it – it does seem that different types of celebrities go to different types of resorts according to the level of experience they have. It will be interesting to see whether the likes of Justin Timberlake graduate to Aspen when they get on a bit..
